OpenAI has unveiled a new Read Aloud feature for ChatGPT, enabling the chatbot to audibly articulate responses using five distinct voices. They shared the news on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “ChatGPT can now read responses to you.”

In September 2023, ChatGPT introduced a voice chat feature that facilitated communication with the chatbot through spoken prompts. The recent addition of the Read Aloud feature takes this capability a step further, allowing users to have written responses audibly read out.

This Feature is presently accessible on both the web version and the iOS/Android applications. As reported by The Verge, it accommodates 37 languages and possesses the capability to automatically identify the language employed in the conversation. Users also have the option to configure ChatGPT to provide verbal responses if desired. This feature is applicable to both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5.

How to use the Read Aloud feature:

  • Open ChatGPT on your browser, Android phone, or iOS device.
  • Input a text prompt in your preferred language.
  • Allow ChatGPT to generate a response to your prompt.
  • Tap and hold on the response from ChatGPT, then select the “Read Aloud” option.
  • A Read Aloud player will appear at the top of the screen, providing users with controls to play, pause, fast forward, or rewind the verbal response from ChatGPT according to their preferences.

For mobile users of ChatGPT, you can press and hold the text to open the Read Aloud player. On the web version, a speaker icon beneath the text signifies the presence of the Read Aloud feature. Clicking on this icon allows you to choose the option to hear the response.

This feature proves particularly useful for users on the go who favor listening to responses to their inquiries.
