Virtual Reality: How to buy the best VR Headset?

Here are the parameters that will help you buy the right hardware!

VR Headset

Onset of Virtual Reality as a technology and its implementation in various domains such as gaming and entertainment has created a unique market for its Headsets. With leading companies such as Oculus, Google, HTC, Sony, etc, competing to capture the biggest market share, a new user might purchase an expensive headset that doesn’t fit his/her needs. To solve this confusion, here are the parameters that should be kept in mind for the most immersive VR Experience:-

Type

There are two major types of VR Headset. Standalone headsets are equipped to provide the VR experience without any external support. On the other hand, the ones that act as a screen for another device are called Tethered headsets. The choice between the two is determined by the purpose of use, budget, and comfort.

Resolution

It defines the pixel dimensions of the VR headset. High resolution captures more details of a scenario and thus, improves the experience. Although most headsets are at par with each other in terms of resolution, it is one of the most important parameters that deserves no compromise.

Refresh Rate

Users experience latency (or lag) due to the low refresh rate. This means that the speed of movement of images and scenes is not at par with the average human eye. Although 60 Hertz is the usual requirement, a higher refresh rate can be preferred.

Compatibility

It is not necessary that each VR headset made by the leading companies is compatible with all the available platforms. The user must prioritize their use and hence, compatibility, while buying the headset. For instance, Oculus Quest is one of the finest machines for Android, but HTC Vive would be a preferred buy for PC users.

Field of View

FOV is defined as the corners of a VR display. The human eye can see the view to approximately 200 degrees. Any device with a lower FOV will make the user spot black corners on the edges.

Weight

When a user has to mount the device on their head, weight plays a significant role in determining the comfort of usage. One should prefer the devices under 400-420 grams.
